"The sentinels, facing the banks of the stream, might have been statues to adorn the bridge." When I read this line, it immediately reminded me of Les Miserables (the musical inspired by the book), when Javert sings Stars. There is a part that goes,
"Stars
In your multitudes
Scarce to be counted
Filling the darkness
With order and light
You are the sentinels
Silent and sure
Keeping watch in the night
Keeping watch in the night"
Then as I was thinking about Javert compared to Peyton, I realized that their characters were similar, but they mirror one another. In Les Mis, Javert is portrayed as the antagonist/villain, but really is just doing what he believes will please God. However, Peyton Farquhar is portrayed as the protagonist/martyr, but is doing what it will please himself and his pride.
I LOVE this connection - one I hadn't thought of. Well done. Lauren!
ReplyDeleteYeah that is true, the question is was Javier really doing what God would like or were is intentions really for himself? God extends mercy, and Javier extended none, he had is reputation to uphold. So which is it? For his opinion of what God wants or actually his reputation?

ReplyDeleteYour so right I would have never thought about this connection. They both were selfish men who only cared about their reputations.
